2016 At The Movies!

Before we take a look at the top 4 movies of 2016, here are some of the more disappointing entries this year.

Meaning to say that they aren’t necessarily bad movies, but they were definitely a let down.

Given the back-to-back disasters that were X3 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past were a surprisingly pleasant return to form, arguably even superior to some of their predecessors. Unfortunately X-Men: Apocalypse fails to fulfil in the categories that the preceding entries did.

I mean, how many times are we gonna have to watch Magneto be a bad guy for the first hour and forty minutes, only to join the good guys in the last twenty and rinse and repeat in the next movie? And, really, the last act of the movie was mostly Xavier lying down while having Poe Dameron rant next to him? What the hell was the point of the Four Horseman and all of that?

The worst part? We finally got a good Storm, and Psylocke actually looked the part.

I love horror. To the point that I’ve pretty much given up on it. I’m done with American shock factors, long-haired Jap crawlies, little Korean boys, and anything Thai.

So imagine my excitement when the early reviews for The Witch rolled in. Not only does it promise to be terrifying, it also purports to be accurate in its depiction of Satanism. Well, it fulfilled the latter, but scary? Only in run time.

The Witch is actually a really good movie. As an analysis of how simple-minded the faithful can be, or how the true object of terror is how religion forces humanity to stay as backward as possible, the film’s idea is downright terrifying. But as a horror movie? Nah

[divider]Doctor Strange[/divider]

While I certainly do not consider Doctor Strange the worst MCU movie (I reserve that honour for Thor: The Dark World), Doctor Strange is certainly the most disappointing.

Easily one of the most visually appealing superheroes, bolstered with the opportunities summoned by a gateway to a whole new realm of story-telling, and coupled with what might be the most star-studded cast of any single Marvel movie that isn’t a crossover, Doctor Strange had no reason to be a half-assed remake of Iron Man with a less charismatic Downey.

Hell, it was such a let down that even Disney knows it and they’re turning to Thor to help boost home media sales by including the hilarious short film Team Thor… which you can just watch here:
