LEGO Builds a Shophouse: Experience A Tribute to Singapore’s Heritage at Design Orchard

Singapore’s rich architectural heritage is getting a colourful LEGO makeover. From 13 March to 5 April, the first-ever LEGO Shophouse Experience will take over Design Orchard, inviting visitors to step into a playful interpretation of one of the country’s most recognisable cultural icons.

Running daily from 11 am to 9 pm, the culture-forward pop-up transforms the space into a whimsical shophouse-inspired environment where tradition, creativity, and imagination come together.

The experience celebrates Singapore’s living heritage through the universal language of LEGO bricks, turning familiar cultural elements into interactive displays that encourage visitors of all ages to rediscover the joy of building.

Shophouses have long been part of Singapore’s urban story. More than just architectural landmarks, they represent generations of memories, communities, and cultural exchange.

The LEGO Shophouse Experience draws inspiration from that legacy by recreating the warm familiarity of a Singaporean home while weaving in playful LEGO interpretations of Peranakan design motifs.

According to Ágnes Molnár, Marketing Director for Singapore, Malaysia and APAC Travel Retail at The LEGO Group, the showcase is designed to celebrate the traditions and stories that connect generations.

By blending cultural inspiration with hands-on creativity, the pop-up offers a new way for visitors to engage with Singapore’s heritage through play.

The journey through the LEGO Shophouse unfolds much like walking through a real home. Guests enter through a foyer featuring Singapore’s first Peranakan-inspired LEGO brick tile wall, a striking centrepiece that blends traditional aesthetics with colourful brickwork.

It doubles as an Instagram-ready backdrop and sets the tone for the rest of the experience.

From there, visitors move into a lively dining area filled with heritage-inspired patterns before entering a cosy living room where LEGO builds demonstrate how the brand’s creations can double as vibrant home décor.

Botanical-themed builds and decorative pieces add splashes of colour, showing how LEGO can move beyond the playroom into everyday living spaces.

Further inside, the experience shifts tone as it explores different themes of creativity. The adult room presents a bold, futuristic retreat filled with dramatic lighting and curated displays, reflecting the passion many adult fans bring to building.

In contrast, the kids’ room embraces softer pastel hues and imaginative layouts, complete with loft beds, study corners, and playful LEGO collections designed to spark curiosity.

The pop-up also highlights fan-built creations, spotlighting the LEGO community’s creativity and demonstrating how builders continue to reinterpret familiar themes in unique ways.

Beyond admiring the displays, visitors can also take part in hands-on activities throughout the experience. Guests can create their own postcard by collecting stamp colours around the space, gradually revealing a graphic that honours Peranakan heritage.

Once completed, they can redeem special buildable keepsakes at the retail zone, including a retro LEGO boombox on weekdays or a Peranakan mosaic tile build on weekends, available in limited quantities each day.

Those who sign up for the LEGO Insiders membership programme onsite can also receive a surprise brick-based reward while stocks last. Visitors can further test their observation skills by guessing the number of bricks used to build the Peranakan tile wall.

At the end of the pop-up, five participants with the closest guesses will walk away with a LEGO set.

For those inspired to continue building at home, a curated retail section offers a range of LEGO sets designed for both play and display.

From artistic builds like Claude Monet’s Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies to botanical-themed creations such as the Sunflower Bouquet, the selection highlights how LEGO sets increasingly blur the line between toy and collectable décor.

In many ways, the LEGO Shophouse Experience captures what Singapore’s cultural spaces do best. It blends nostalgia with modern creativity, inviting families, fans, and curious visitors alike to step inside, slow down, and rediscover the simple joy of building something together.
