Zack Snyder has had his hits and misses in the last decade or so, but Twilight of the Gods, for me, was a hit! Did he “borrow” a key theme from the God of War video game series? Sure he did, but that’s just Hollywood! What he did reinvigorate was Norse mythology itself, blending traditional stories that have been told over eons and mixing them up with new characters and an alternative story.
Twilight of the Gods portrays the Aesir closer to what they truly are in mythology. So take all preconceived notions you have from the Marvel Cinematic Universe where Thor is pretty much comic relief at this point (I blame Taika Waititi for this…) and toss it out the window.
Get ready for the real God of Thunder, Lightning and Storms. Red haired and seeing red half the time in his everlasting bone to pick with Loki, this Thor cares little for humans and giants (which kind of starts a revenge plot against him).
We get a good glimpse and introduction to the Vanir, lesser known gods who’ve been subjugated by the Aesir (Odin & Co.) too, something we’ve not really seen in movies or TV. There’s a brief history of what went down between the two godly factions and how the outcome of that has affected each group.
The main story itself follows Sigrid, seemingly one hel of a shield maiden who saves the life of King Leif, whom she later is sworn to marry. The sunshine doesn’t last in that relationship when Thor brings the rain down on their wedding day. The rest of the series is dedicated to Sigrid and her party of warriors on a mission to take down the Thunderer himself. With each party member having their own reasons for being on this doomed quest, journey with them through the realms and find out what fate awaits them at the gates of Asgard!
I’m personally hoping there is a season two, because I’d like to see more of the human characters, but the way the eight episode series ended, it looks like there may or may not be a second season. So tuck in for an evening and enjoy this very binge worthy animated series!
