Sonos Introduces Play and Era 100 SL Speakers to Expand Its Multi-Room Audio System

Sonos has announced two new speakers, the Sonos Play and Sonos Era 100 SL, marking the company’s latest move to strengthen its multi-room audio ecosystem.

The two products are designed to make it easier for users to start a Sonos system and gradually expand it across different rooms and listening environments.

The launch reflects the company’s continued focus on building a connected audio platform that integrates multiple speakers into a single system. According to Sonos, the new speakers are intended to deliver room-filling sound while allowing users to add more devices over time without replacing existing hardware.

Sonos Play is positioned as the brand’s most versatile speaker, combining portable listening with full integration into the Sonos system. When connected over WiFi, the speaker can be grouped with other Sonos speakers across rooms or paired for stereo sound.

The speaker can also operate via Bluetooth for portable listening, offering up to 24 hours of battery life in an IP67-rated design that protects against dust and water.

The device includes a removable utility loop for portability and a built-in power bank that can charge mobile devices. Sonos also introduced a new feature that allows users to group multiple compatible speakers directly via Bluetooth when away from home.

By connecting Sonos Play to a phone and holding the Play/Pause button on additional Sonos Play or Move 2 speakers, users can synchronise them for shared playback. The speaker also includes automatic Trueplay tuning, which adjusts sound output based on the surrounding environment.

Alongside the portable model, the Sonos Era 100 SL offers a simplified entry point into the Sonos ecosystem. The speaker features a microphone-free design and a streamlined feature set while still delivering the stereo sound performance of the Era 100 series.

Sonos says the product is intended for users who prefer not to use voice assistants or who are looking for a more accessible way to begin building a Sonos system.

Both speakers support a wide range of streaming options, including more than 100 streaming services, Spotify Connect, Apple AirPlay 2, voice services, and control through the Sonos app.

Sonos also noted that the products were tuned with input from the Sonos Soundboard, a group of creators from the music and film industries that helps ensure sound reproduction stays faithful to the original recording.
