Singapore Singer-Songwriter Jean Tan has released her latest single ‘Dance’ – a collaboration with producer and arranger Evanturetime (Evan Low) as well as artiste and vocal producer Joanna Dong.
True to Jean’s R&B and jazz fusion roots, the song features a pop acoustic guitar playing a smooth, rhythmic accompaniment. Accompanied by sharp finger snaps, a tight drum groove, and the occasional deep bass riffs in the second verse, the feel-good vibes are only further augmented by the lyrics:
“You’re my charming darlin’, disarmin’ dreamer
My every breath, my every answer
One gaze from your eyes, the touch of your hand
Brings me back to you…”
Using the metaphor of a dance between lovers, Jean explores the blossoming happiness that comes with a steady, mature relationship. Though the man in question starts off as a charming dancer, he soon becomes a best friend and believer — one that holds safe space rather than sweeps his partner off her feet.
As the song slips into an instrumental section, it’s easy to imagine two entwined lovers slow dancing to Jean’s signature scatting and a soft, moving saxophone solo.
The arrangement recalls the sentimentalism of Lianne La Havas and classic dreaminess of Marcos Valle, and gives one the feeling of warm, quiet assurance.
‘Dance’ is the third single from Jean’s upcoming EP project—a rumination on life and love—scheduled to drop by May 2023. ‘Dance’ is now available on all major digital streaming platforms via Believe Music and LEEWAY.
