Recently we got our hands on the extremely bling ROG Strix SCAR 15 (2020) gaming laptop from ASUS. We think that now might be the best time to get this machine.

The ROG Strix SCAR series is ASUS’s line that’s designed to deliver speed, power, and performance to elevate your PC gaming experience. It’s outfitted with the the latest generation of Intel Core i7 processors and powerful GeForce RTX graphics. Supported by a 300Hz/3ms gaming panel and you’re all set.

However, we’re taking a look at the 2020 model, that doesn’t have the very latest components, and is a generation behind.

The ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 15 (2020) has a very sleek, nice black metal look, and your fingers glide across the keyboard easily. It doesn’t waver from previous SCAR designs, so if you’re a fan, you know what you’re getting.

This laptop is all about RGB lighting. It is everywhere – from the sides of the laptop and the keyboard to the logo. It all lights up. Even the trackpad, that also doubles up as the number pad, lights up and adds to the whole bling aspect to this laptop.

Externally you have one Type C USB 3.2 (Gen 2) with Display Port and G-Sync, three Type A USB 3.2 (Gen 1) ports, and one HDMI port for your connectivity needs.

Inside, you’ve got the 10th Gen Intel Core i7 processor and a Nvidia 2070 Super RTX graphics card. Being a discrete graphics card, you know that it can handle some pressure. With Wi-Fi 6 capability, you know you won’t have much issues with your wireless internet access – at least on the laptop’s end.

We ran a couple of benchmark tests on PCMark 10 and the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 15 easily handles most common office applications as well as photo and video editing.

PCMark10 Comp

On a gaming front, this laptop easily hits more than 130 fps on popular games such as Fortnite and Apex Legends. No problems there.

3D Mark Comparison

One think to note is that while it has 16GB of RAM, it’s configured in a single channel (i.e. one stick of RAM, rather than two 8GB). Typically dual channels work better. However,  I would get another 16GB of ram and stick it in there to help with performance issues down the line as the machine starts to age.

3D Mark Comparison FPS

One of the things that I really liked was the 300 Hz screen with a 3ms response time. That’s really good if you’re thinking about gaming – especially FPS.

One thing note is that while this can game quite well today, it is a generation behind in terms of graphics with the NVIDIA 2070 Super graphics card. We are just a couple of months away from the 2021 model with the latest graphics cards to be released.

However, the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 15 (2020) is now available at around SGD 3,200 after a 20% discount rather than its SGD 4,000 price tag. You can probably expect the 2021 model to be priced around that range as well. At its current price, we would consider it good value for money.

In addition to the machine, you also get a complete gaming set up. The ROG Strix SCAR 15 (2020) comes bundled with a [email protected] external camera, a ASUS IMPACT gaming mouse, a gaming headset and a backpack.

If you’re a person that wants the best specs possible, wait a couple of months for the ROG Strix SCAR 15 2021 model. If you want a good gaming laptop that can perform, but isn’t necessarily the latest, the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 15 is a good pick.
