Antonio Conte Wants Lukaku At Inter Milan

Inter Milan fell short to Manchester United when they met at the Singapore National Stadium on July 20. The final score was 1-0 to the Red Devils and here is what Antonio Conte had to say after the match.

On Ivan Perišić: He did not perform as expected today, but we have to keep playing him in a forward attacking position.

He has worked hard, has shown good spirit and work rate but at the moment I don’t have the best feelings about him being able to play in that role.

We knew it would be diff today, we got a diff season ahead. The team showed a good spirit and fighting for the result but we didn’t get it. We got a lot to improve around moving the ball, possession and pressing especially. We spent the last few days working very hard.

Thoughts: Looks like Perišić will not be featuring in Conte’s long term plans at Inter. Perhaps it is time for the Croatian to move on.

On the performance: It was a great commitment from my players, the whole team tried to overcome the difficulty of the game against a good, physical team. I’m satisfied with my players. We need to improve a lot, to move the ball quickly.

I won with Juventus and Chelsea, there is pressure when you become the coach for an important team.

Thoughts: Inter have an uphill battle ahead of them in the Serie A after finishing fourth last season. Can Conte be the man to bring back the glory days of the Italian giants?

On Paul Pogba: He is highly regarded in my mind, we just had a few words. Also because recently he had a child, and what we said remains between us.

On Romelu Lukaku: It’s not right to speak about a player that is a United player. We must show great respect for the club and player and also for my players. Lukaku is a player I like, I consider him a player that could improve our team. In one side he is my hope, on the other side, we will see what we find with the club.

Thoughts: Man United have been fairly firm with their price set on Lukaku and if Inter were to meet that bid, they’ll have their man. A move to Italy would benefit Lukaku. He is a capable finisher, however in the fast paced environment of the English Premier League, his poor ball control is often exposed. Perhaps in the Italian league, he would have more time to hone his finishing and possibly work on this touches as well.

Inter Milan will go on to play Juventus on July 24 at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Center in Nanjng and Tottenham Hotspur on August 4 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
