Mauricio Pochettino on Harry Kane and a Spurs Victory

Tottenham Hotspur snatched a late victory via Harry Kane in the dying moments of extra time to pip Juventus to a 3-2 victory.

It was a fairly even match which saw Juventus have slightly more ball possession and passes but Spurs taking more shots on goal. A first-half goal from Erik Lamela saw Spurs end the half with the lead. However, a quick fire double from Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo put Juventus back in front in the second half. Luca Moura hit back to level Spurs and Harry Kane with the halfway line stunner to seal the win in extra time.

Here’s what Mauricio Pochettino had to say whilst in Singapore:

On touring Asia and thoughts on Son: It’s always special to come to Asia, the fans here are unbelievable. They always show great respect to the team and give us a very warm welcome. It’s my first time in Singapore and it’s been amazing-discovering the city and the people here have been very nice. We are trying to ensure our fans here follow us and they always send us great energy to help us to win. For me, Son is the best Asian player.

Thoughts: I agree that Son is the best Asian player out there, wonder when he’ll be moving to Spain.

On the Champions League Final: How we prepared for the finals was unbelievable, we were happy. It was the best in 5 years. It was a shame to finish as the losing team. It’s still hard, it’s still tough, it’s still difficult but we need to move on. It was the first time in history for Tottenham to get to the finals of the Champions League and be so close to winning.

Last week we started training and started to get our drive and motivation again and of course we look forward to another season, nonetheless there is still a lot of things to work on and we are still far away from what we expect to be. Every season has massive challenges for everyone, not only just for me as a coach but also the player’s challenges. Thus, we need time to settle down to a good place and to design a plan to be in a good position in Premier League and also the Champions League too.

On Kieran Trippier’s departure and Danny Rose’s last game for Spurs: It is true that these are player and club decisions. We need to listen to the players, and the club will do what the club needs to under different circumstances.

Danny is still our player, Danny and Vincent deal with the club with their agents to fix any personal and professional problems. When we return to London after ten days from preseason and the players are still there, they are still part of the team.

Only for today, Kieran made his own decision to leave before the day we were travelling here, and he told me he accepted an offer with Atletico Madrid. The club then communicated to me that they agreed on a deal. I was not involved in all of these discussions in the last week.

On staying: I told you that after 5 years in a difficult project in Tottenham, I think we talk a lot about perception and the reality and how we fight, and all the energy that we spend trying to put Tottenham in a fighting position against the best teams in Europe and in the world.

How I am-I always prioritise the club before myself. Maybe it should have been a different result after the final and maybe you think it’s the moment to step out of the club, to pursue a new chapter with a new coach and coaching style. I am not a person that avoids problems or facing a difficult situation. I am someone who loves big challenges and difficult challenges. To rebuild that mentality is possible for next season and it is possible to repeat a similar season, this excites me and motivates me a lot.

When you touch in glory, sometimes you will play different, you feel different, the players feel different, the challenge becomes different. Kieran Trippier explained to me he loved to play for Tottenham, he loves playing with us but when you 28/29-year-old player, sometimes you need to discover new things and new challenges and that is inside yourself. It is about accepting yourself as an individual and how you feel and accepting your individual challenge.

Tottenham Hotspur will go on to play Manchester United on July 25 at the Hongkou Stadium in Shanghai and Inter Milan on August 4 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
