The LEGO DC BATMAN 1989 Batwing has finally swooped into stores and boy, it is epic.

The Batwing is part of the LEGO DC BATMAN 1989 collection that includes the previously released Batmobile from Tim Burton’s Batman that starred Michael Keaton as the Dark Knight and Jack Nicholson as The Joker.

While I’m not the biggest Batman fan out there (especially in recent years), the 1989 movie has a special place in my heart. It was one of the first movies (definitely the superhero movie) that I had seen in the theatres.

In today’s context it may be considered campy and totally ridiculous in parts, but, it was glorious with some of the best looking vehicles ever. The 1989 Batmobile and Batwing are still some of the best looking vehicles the Batcave has ever seen and it is no surprise that LEGO has chosen them for the collection.

Not for the faint of heart, the Batwing is part of LEGO’s line of builds for adults. The set, given an 18+ age rating, is made up of 2,363 pieces and will need some serious time dedicated to complete the build.

It took about 8 hours to build – with a couple of extra hands at different stages, which I’m not sped up, or slowed down the process. If you’re frequently building LEGO, then you’ll definitely need to set aside a good chunk of time to get it done.

LEGO does make it an orderly process though. If you haven’t built a LEGO kit in a while (or at all), the bricks are all nicely segmented into different packets that allow you to follow the guide and build in stages – there are 13.

The 1989 Batwing also includes 3 minifigures – Batman, The Joker and a Boombox goon, as well as a display stand for the main build. Batman and The Joker minifigures are movie accurate as well.

Batman has a really stiff rubbery cape, much like Keaton’s suit, and The (Mime) Joker carries a feather with a white flower painted on his body very much like Nicholson’s portrayal of the character.

Measuring over 52cm long and 59cm wide, the 1989 Batwing is a beast of a build and a joy to behold once completed. The next part of the adventure is finding the best way to display it.

While you can display the Batwing on a counter-top with the display stand, in my opinion, there is no better way to display the Batwing other than mounting it up on a wall.

The 1989 Batwing kit comes with a special LEGO brick that allows you to secure the completed construction with a standard screw and wall plug.

The LEGO DC BATMAN 1989 Batwing is not just for the LEGO or Batman fan, but for anyone that appreciates pop-culture. It makes an amazing centerpiece in a any room and definitely a conversation starter.

The LEGO DC BATMAN 1989 Batwing is now available at SGD 349.90, directly via LEGO Certified Stores.
