Man, how long has it been? No, I’m not talking about how long since the last Star Wars movie (10 years, 4 months, 3 weeks, 6 days) but instead how long it’s been since we’ve gotten a new Star Wars Battlefront game
Heck, it’s been so long the developers decided to scrap the ‘3’ in the title in hopes that we’d forget it’s been 10 years since the last game. But no, we the loyal fans of the series did not! However, I gotta say, first impressions wise, this game was completely worth the wait and boy, even with such few features available I’m in awe.
Developed by DICE, the same people who gave Battlefield, you can expect nothing less than amazement when it comes to First Person Shooters (FPS). I’m talking about crisp graphics, scenic maps from the universe and sounds that are all just too familiar to any Star Wars fan—just a few minutes in and I was hooked.
Gameplay wise, you’ve got your standard level up system, unlockable guns, ordnance… you know that kind of stuff and then–OH MY GOD! A Y-Wing just flew past! Lots of blaster shots everywhere! To top it off, prepare for chicken legs (you fans will get this reference) and AT-AT Walkers. And the best part? You’re right smack in the middle of it and it is a rush!
Whether you’re playing as a Rebel or Imperial Soldier the action is just non-stop, with each map having a particular objective, you and your teammates are forced to play as a team in order win, bringing the ante up another level.
Like Battlefield, you get to pilot vehicles when available to you in order to help your team dominate the skirmish or simply crash and burn. Another thing to take note is that maps like Hoth are huge and have a 40 player lobby which, again like Battlefield, is crazy intense as you can get shot from anywhere!
Of course, having saved the best for last, you can also pick up power ups on the ground, you know like energy boosts, ordnance or a Sith/Jedi no biggie, except playing as those guys makes you an unstoppable force (geddit?) and it’s just so surreal it’s crazy!
Graphics wise, the game is very fluid and very realistic: the snow literally rumbles and moves when the leg of the AT-AT hits the ground, sparks fly when you shoot an object, Stormtroopers and Rebels are movie accurate with all their different armours and costumes—you can just tell how much of effort the developers put in to the design, making us players feel we’re in the universe of Star Wars.
The only negatives I could find in the game was the usual bugs in any beta such as framerate drops, sudden crashing of the game and it occasionally not responding. However, I believe all of this will get fixed once the game is released so do not fret my young padawans!
Overall, while there aren’t many features available, this beta has already got me sold that this is the FPS I’ve been waiting for a long time, and even if you’re not a Star Wars fan but just love FPS this might be the game for you.
Seriously guys, this game is just awesome!
