Ever wondered what would happen if Juliet, Shakespeare’s infamous tragic heroine, said “Forget this” and took control of her own story? Created by David West Read, the mastermind behind Netflix’s hit “Schitt’s Creek,” “& Juliet” does just that and is now lighting up the stage at Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands.
Directed by Luke Sheppard, who made waves with “In the Heights,” and featuring choreography by Jennifer Weber, this show’s got a creative squad that’s simply top-notch. Throw in the eye-catching sets by Soutra Gilmour, and you’re in for more than just a show—you’re in for an experience.
Not just another ‘girl power’ jukebox musical, “& Juliet” offers so much more. It tackles broader issues like gender fluidity and feminism while emphasizing the importance of taking the reins of your own life.
Read’s script is brilliant. It’s loaded with wit and laughs, making it a defining element that sets the musical apart from others in its league.
Lorinda May Merrypor completely owns her role as Juliet. She’s a firecracker from the first scene to the curtain call.
Casey Donovan who plays Juliet’s Nurse, Angelique, is a revelation. Her comic timing is spot-on and she really shines in Act 2.
More than just Juliet’s story, the show adds another layer by exploring the relationship between William Shakespeare and his wife, Anne Hathaway. It’s like a story within a story, adding a little extra to the mix and tackling the trials of marriage and devotion to one’s craft.
Set designs aren’t just there for show; they’re brilliantly functional, setting the stage—literally—for every scene.
As for the music, prepare to jam. The playlist is a collection of chart-toppers from legendary songwriter Max Martin. You won’t just be tapping your feet; you’ll be resisting the urge to get up and dance – you’re even encouraged to do just that (at the right parts).
The songs also get new meaning as they are incorporated in the show and draw the audience in with their familiarity, but also a new context for the show and script.
In a nutshell, “& Juliet” is a fresh, humorous, and thoroughly modern adaptation of a story you thought you knew. It’s not just about love; it’s a rally for everyone who ever dreamed of rewriting their own narrative.
With something for everyone, if you only see one show this year, &Juliet should be at the top of that list (or close to it).
