The story is extremely hard to follow and understand
Too many main characters
You need to do some homework before watching
There are very few musicals as iconic as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats. After watching the recent production at Marina Bay Sands Theatre, I can see why.
The first thing I can say is that this musical has the best cast I’ve ever had the privilege of watching. The singing was beautiful, the acting was mesmerising, and the dancing was absolute poetry in motion. With the legacy that this production has, it’s very hard to live up to the hype. This cast goes above and beyond.
The absolute highlight is the dancing. Both the choreography and the technical prowess of the dancers are at a level I’ve never seen before. I’ve watched dance companies with dancers below the level of these performers. The stand out performance for me was the solo dance of Mr.Mistoffelees–his jumps and turns were both flawless and exciting to watch.
The production value is one of the highest I’ve seen. The set that was built and the props are both eye appealing and help to pull you into the production. The lighting design is so good that the lights become an actual character in the the show, that has its own lines and dramatic action scenes. It’s quite interesting to see how the lighting can make a production seem either evil, lighthearted, serious, or funny.
But really, how surprising is that? After all, it is Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats!
I have two recommendations before watching this musical (and believe me you want to watch it). The first is get a seat closer to the aisle. There are a lot of parts where the performers go up and down the aisles and you don’t want to miss your chance at seeing the magnificent costumes up close. The costumes are actually quite extraordinary.
The second, and more important, read up on the story. It’s is a very confusing story, and extremely hard to follow unless you have a general idea of what to expect. I have watched just about every musical there is to watch but somehow Cats was one of the few I haven’t. Having no knowledge of the plot I was extremely confused about what was going on. So do yourself a favour and maybe read the wiki first.
